Speech in favor of Ron Paul

The following is a speech prepared for the Fayette county Kentucky, Republican convention:

Fellow Republicans, my name is Frank Harris, I have been a registered Republican since age 18, and a resident of Lexington for all of my 46 years, raising my 8 year old granddaughter, and I am here to introduce a man, Dr. Ron Paul, who embodies the values of the Republican Party as no other politician that I have seen in my lifetime.

As a life-long Republican, i, like many Republicans, have some concerns over the divisions that are emerging within the Republican Party. Concerns over the party's position on issues that have allowed the Democrats to gain seats in the Congress. Positions that are not working, and which will not help us to win the 2008 Presidential election.

While I greatly respect Senator John McCain, and know that he is going to be a strong representative for the Republican Party in the November election as our Republican nominee, it is still of great importance that we in the Kentucky primaries send a message to the Republican Party throughout America that we have some profound concerns over many key issues, issues that have emerged within our party over the direction that our party has taken, by giving Ron Paul our vote in the Kentucky primaries in May.

Ron Paul's positions are all based on the Constitution. He stands for a much smaller government, balanced federal budgets, and a foreign policy based upon trade and diplomacy, not force. He stands for enforcing laws to prevent illegal immigration. His career as an OB/GYN doctor in which he has delivered over 4000 babies, has shaped his position as a pro-life Republican, and he has consistently voted pro-life on any abortion issue.

His experience as a ten-term Congressman has uniquely shaped him to be able to understand the real issues facing America - issues with the falling dollar, a rapidly weakening economy, rising oil prices, rising food prices - he has served on many of the key Congressional financal committees, and understands these issues.

Like John McCain, he has also served in the military. He was a flight surgeon for five years. Unlike McCain, Ron Paul feels that the war in Iraq - a war which has divided us as a country, and also within the Republican Parry - Ron Paul feels that the war has been a drain on our economy, costing, so far, thousands of lives, and well over $2.0 trillion dollars. With our deficit at $9 trillion and rising, this has been a major factor in our falling dollar, a dollar which, today, is at an all-time low against all other currencies. John McCain has said that it's ok with him if we are in Iraq for 100 years - Ron Paul says, and we all know, that this is unsustainable.

This war in Iraq threatens our way of life, and also threatens to cost the Republican Party in this, and future elections, the loss of the House, Senate, and the Presidency.

Let's send a message to the entire country that we, as Republicans, stand for peace and prosperity, and strength through a strong economy, not through war. Let's redefine the Republican party BACK to what it used to be - a party built on sound fiscal, and moral, principles.

It is my pleasure to endorse Dr. Ron Paul as the Republican candidate for the President of the United States.

Ron Paul has another quarter of a million day

November 20th, Ron Paul sent out an E-mail at 2pm asking for donations. This E-mail asked supporters to donate now as opposed to later. Ron Paul requested funds to help his campaign in the early primary states, arguing that the funds could be used more effectively now as opposed to later. Ron Paul supporters stepped up to the challenge and by the end of the day donated a quarter of a million to the campaign.

On an unrelated note, Mike Huckabee had an official fund raiser today, which pulled in just over $220,000. This helped Huckabee reach his goal of one million and change for the month of November. Click the graph below to enlarge it.

Here's the unofficial numbers for the Veteran's Day fund raiser. Just above $233 thousand dollars. This was a great day. Dr. Paul's campaign passed the eight million mark. That is two thirds of his $12 million goal of the quarter. Only half of the quarter is over leaving Ron Paul's campaign in good shape.

There is $714K pledged to Ron Paul's campaign. This money will be donated on the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party on December 16th. With all the time between now and December 16th it's quite possible that the Campaign could break its record of $4M of donations in one day.

Ron Paul sticks it to Ben Bernanke in this video below. While Ron Paul is speaking they show the Euro, and the British Pound getting stronger against the dollar. They show that the Yen is weaker than at the beginning of the day. Still they show that the Dollar buys 112 yen that's down from 114 this week and 118 in the past month.

If that currency jargon bothers or doesn't interest you, then the next pieces of information should. They show Oil at $97/barrel. That's up from $60 before the summer and is above last years high which was around $80. Our weak dollar contributes to this higher cost of Oil. They also quote Heating oil and RBOB gasoline. RBOB gasoline is quoted at almost $2.50. This is the price of gas before blending bought in bulk. It would seem that everyone is interested in the fact that gas is going up.

Another "complicated" issue that Congressman Paul refers to is the M3. M3 is a number that should be thought of as all the money in circulation. This includes the money in certificates of deposit and bonds. At some point the federal reserve stopped reporting this number. It is mysterious as to why this number would not be reported. The MZM referred to can be thought of as all money available on demand.

It's not clear who was laughing at the decreasing standard living of the elderly in America at the end of this clip.

Ron Paul’s presidential campaign seems to be on track to double campaign contributions for the fourth quarter. The strange fact is that today (one day) his campaign is going to take in more donations than he did all last month.

Dwight Eisenhower was elected with the support of a broad base. He appealed to democrats and republicans. During the Republican Convention when he was nominated there was a complaint that many democrats were influencing the Republican nomination. During that time there was a simple slogan in support of Eisenhower: “I like Ike.”

I like Ike. A simple sentence, to the point, that doesn’t take a treatise to explain. Ron Paul needs a statement that is just as simple and easy to repeat. Let me suggest the sentence: “I’m pulling for Paul.”

Who is Murray Rothbard? No, he’s not running for president. He was an economist who lays out an argument for a new liberty in his book For a New Liberty. M. Rothbard may be called an Austrian Economist. Austrian Economics differs from some other economic theories, the main competing theory being the Chicago school. Milton Freedman is an example of someone in the Chicago school. One big difference is that “Austrians” support a value backed currency, just like Ron Paul.

If you are interested in the academic background of Ron Paul’s ideas you could read M. Rothbard’s book. But I must include the warning that Rothbard’s book is more radical than Ron Paul’s position. Ron Paul seems to be more influenced by Ludwig von Mises. Ron Paul has mentioned his book Human Action. I have not read this book but I enjoyed Liberalism and Omnipotent Government.

Ludwig von Mises immigrated form Austria before the Second World War, and spearheaded his economic theory. That’s why it’s referred to as Austrian Economics.

In response to a Winchester Sun article titled "McConnell calls for troop withdrawal." The choice of title for this article leaves me confused. My confusion is based on the fact that the article claims that McConnell is in favor of a "long term, but smaller presence in the region." This does not sound like a withdrawal to me.

Over the course of years American forces have acquired presences in many countries. In 2004 there were 702 foreign U.S. military bases in about 130 countries. This is a disturbing number, and is contra to the purpose of peace. I think that our senator needs not only to address our troops in Iraq, but all our boys and girls who are stationed around world. I would like him to answer the question "How is this sustainable?"
